About FlashCast
An open-source tool that makes "I just want to watch this video" a two-second job: paste the address, start playing.
Why it exists
M3U8 stream URLs show up all the time in day-to-day work: sports broadcasts, online courses, transcoded VOD output. Yet most tools either demand a browser extension, wrap the page in ads, or simply break on mobile.
FlashCast started from a simple premise — do the playback itself well, and keep everything else out of the way. What came out of that is a lightweight, sign-up-free player.
Technical architecture
The player is built on HTML5 and the Tencent Cloud VOD SDK (TCPlayer). TCPlayer is based on video.js and embeds hls.js to parse HLS segments and handle adaptive bitrate switching, which keeps playback smooth even when a live stream's network conditions fluctuate.
Multiple playback paths
- Primary: TCPlayer covers the vast majority of cases with full controls, including quality switching and playback speed.
- Fallback one: if TCPlayer fails to initialise, the player switches to native HLS support (Safari).
- Fallback two: on Chrome and Firefox, hls.js is loaded asynchronously on demand so it never blocks first paint.
- Clear feedback: loading, playing and failure states are all surfaced visually and to assistive technology.
Lightweight on purpose
The previous version pulled in jQuery and Bootstrap 3 — over 200KB combined —
to achieve the same interface, and it actually used them for a single .val() call
and one alert box style. That is a noticeable cost to first paint on mobile.
The rewrite removes both dependencies in favour of vanilla JavaScript and hand-written CSS, and
splits the code into css/style.css and js/app.js so the browser can
cache them properly.
Privacy
FlashCast has no account system, builds no user profiles, and never records what you played. The playback request goes straight from your browser to the target streaming server; we only render it.
Deployment and licensing
The player runs on the Tencent Cloud VOD (VCube) SDK, which requires a licenseUrl that is applied for per site. It is a browser-side playback permission token used to validate playback requests.
How to apply
- Open the Tencent Cloud VOD console: console.cloud.tencent.com/vcube/web
- Sign in with a Tencent Cloud account and complete identity verification.
- Create a VOD player application and choose Web Player as the product type.
- Once approved, the console shows a licenseUrl shaped like
https://<appid>.trtcube-license.cn/license/v2/<appid>_1/v_cube.license. - Paste that address into the
licenseUrlfield injs/config.js.
A full deployment checklist lives in the project README, and indexing guidance is documented
in SEO.md.
Content notice
This tool provides playback capability only. It neither stores nor distributes any audio or video content, and the sample URLs on the page come from public test streams. Resources collected from the public internet; contact us to remove infringing content.
